Vol. 425 No. 7

Written Answers. - Donegal Potato Industry Report.

Robert Molloy

Question:

392 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if he has received a copy of the Donegal Potato Industry report; and if he will give details of the submission made to the EC Commission requesting Community assistance and the outcome, if any, to date.

I have received a copy of the report in question. I have made a strong case to the Commission for aid for potato producers in County Donegal. The Commission has replied that, while they can sympathise with the producers' difficulties, there are only limited means available to them to help in these circumstances and that it was never the intention that Community funds should be used to compensate for loss of income due to poor weather conditions.

However, I am pursuing, as a matter of urgency, the possibility of Community intervention under the Community Support Framework for restoring agricultural production potential following natural disasters.
