Vol. 425 No. 7

Written Answers. - Aldicarb Poisoning.

Bernard Allen

Question:

435 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health if he proposes to carry out further investigations into the acute poisoning of at least 29 people by the misuse of aldicarb on cucumbers; and the research, if any, which has been carried out into the long-term effects of aldicarb pesticide poisoning on humans.

Further investigations into this incident are not proposed as the cause of the illnesses reported was detected and dealt with at that time. New restrictions on the use of pesticides, including aldicarb, are being introduced this year by the Department of Agriculture.

Research carried out by the World Health Organisation and the Food and Agriculture Organisation on aldicarb poisoning indicates that there is no evidence to date of any long term effect on the health of humans.
