Vol. 425 No. 7

Written Answers. - Night Shelters for the Homeless.

Proinsias De Rossa

Question:

462 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Health whether the provisions of the Food Hygiene Regulations, 1950-89 will be extended to night shelters for homeless people.

The provisions of the Food Hygiene Regulations already apply to places, including hostels or similar establishments in which there is accommodation for six or more guests, in which food is supplied by the proprietor and a charge is made for it. However, irrespective of the strictly legal position, it is the practice for health board officers to inspect the catering facilities of night shelters. If the Deputy has a concern about any particular night shelter, perhaps he would furnish me with details and I will follow it up and communicate the result of my inquiries to him.
