Vol. 425 No. 7

Written Answers. - Cork School Transport.

Frank Crowley

Question:

496 Mr. Crowley asked the Minister for Education the reason a person (details supplied) in County Cork was refused school transport; and if she will reconsider this decision.

My Department provide transport facilities for children attending special schools and classes where this can be done within reasonable cost limits.

The child in question resides 11.7 miles from the school mentioned by the Deputy and 3.9 miles from the route of the existing bus service.

Due to the high cost of providing the child with a home pick-up and the inconvenience that this would cause to six other children using the service, my Department are not in a position to sanction an extension of the service in this case.

As an alternative my Department have sanctioned a transport grant, not exceeding £300 per school year, to the child's parents to assist towards the cost of private transport arrangements to the nearest pick-up point.
