Vol. 425 No. 7

Written Answers. - Substitute Teachers' Salaries.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

565 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education the reason payments of salaries to substitute teachers are issued only on Fridays; and the special arrangements, if any, which were made in 1993 to ensure that substitute teachers received their salaries on time in view of the fact that two consecutive Fridays, 25 December 1992 and 1 January 1993 were public holidays.

Substitute teachers are paid by the Department when a certified claim form is submitted by the Board of Management of the school. Normally, all properly completed claims for payment received by noon on Wednesday of any particular week are paid on the Friday of that week.

All claims received in the Department by 16 December 1992 were paid by 18 December. It was not practical because of the nature of the payroll to have payments issued on the dates referred to by the Deputy.
