Vol. 426 No. 2

Written Answers. - DART System.

Richard Bruton

Question:

113 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the opening of a DART station in Fairview, Dublin 3, would open up a new catchment to be served by the existing DART system, at a low cost in terms of investment; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The provision and upgrading of stations and facilities on the suburban rail network is a matter for Iarnrod Éireann. However, in this context I would draw the Deputy's attention to the recently published Interim Report of the Dublin Transportation Initiative (in which Iarnród Éireann is an active participant) which includes a recommendation for the construction of new DART Stations at Fairview and Barrow Street. These recommendations will be subject to further extensive analysis, the results of which will be reflected in the final report of the DTI which is expected in April 1993.

I would also emphasise that the availability of significant levels of EC Funds will be essential for the implementation of the public transport elements of the DTI. Both the interim and final reports of the DTI will form an integral part of the Government's input into negotiations on EC Funds for the period after 1993.
