Question:

69 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice the total number and location of prison places now available in the country; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

72 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice the total number of prison places currently available in the country to cater for male and female prisoners and male and female juvenile offenders; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

77 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice the total estimated prison place requirements in the country for male and female prisoners and and male and female juvenile offenders; and if she will make a statement on the matter with a view to meeting requirements.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 69, 72 and 77 together.

The daily average number of persons in custody is 2,190 of which 39 are females and 42 juvenile males (i.e. under 17 years). Currently there are no juvenile females in prison.

Prisoners are housed in 12 institutions throughout the country as follows:

At present a comprehensive review is underway with a view to updating the overall aims and objectives of the prison system and the need for extra prison accommodation is being considered in that context.
