Vol. 426 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Síochána Entry Regulations.

Ivor Callely

Question:

74 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice if she will seek a report from the Garda Commissioner to review the minimum height regulations for entry to the Garda Síochána; and if she or the Commissioner has received submissions on this matter.

The Garda Síochána entry regulations provide that the Commissioner shall not admit a person as a trainee member of the force unless, in the case of a man, he is not less than five feet nine inches in height and, in the case of a woman, she is not less than five feet five inches in height.

Inquiries are received from individuals from time to time regarding the height requirements but no submissions have been received on this matter.

The Garda authorities wish to retain these height requirments and I am disposed to be guided by them in this matter.
