Vol. 427 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Secretarial/Caretaker Services.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

205 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education if she will give a list of the schools which were provided with secretarial or caretaker assistance arising from commitments made in the Programme for Economic and Social Progress; and if she will give details of the basis on which the schools concerned were selected.

The Programme for Economic and Social Progress stated that the programme for the provision of secretarial and caretaker assistance would be phased on the basis of school size.

The programme commenced at the start of the 1992-93 school-year and the number of schools benefiting was determined, in first instance by the funds available in that year.

Primary schools with enrolments of 500 pupils or more with no provision or having either caretaking or clerical assistance already were selected under phase one of the programme. This arrangement is benefiting 175 schools in the current year.

A total of 69 secondary schools received grants towards the provision of either secretary or caretaker assistance. These schools were selected on the basis of having had enrolments of at least 450 pupils and not being in receipt of secretarial services under a previous scheme for providing such services to schools.

Partial posts for secretaries and caretakers were created in 20 vocational schools to supplement partial posts already in these schools. Selection was on the basis of schools having enrolment of 377 pupils or more.

The equivalent of 8.5 whole-time caretaker posts were created in nine Community or Comprehensive schools, which were considered to be most in need of them on the basis of the sizes of their day and night enrolments and of their premises.

I am arranging for a list of the schools in question to be forwarded to the Deputy.
