Question:

211 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Education the daily rate of pay paid to qualified substitute teachers, the total this would amount to for a school year; if she will give a comparison of this figure and the salary which a permanent teacher would receive for a year.

The daily rate of pay for qualified substitute teachers is £60.22. The annual rate is £11,080.48. The common basic salary scale for permanent/temporary teachers ranges from £12,370 on the 1st point to £23,724 on the 18th point which is attained after 25 years service.

Question:

212 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Education the number of substitute teachers employed in primary schools each day in this country; and the number of these who are qualified teachers.

The average number of substitute teachers employed in primary schools each day is 800. It is Department policy to encourage Boards of Management of primary schools to employ qualified substitutes only.
