Vol. 427 No. 2

Written Answers. - Public Services Estimates.

Colm M. Hilliard

Question:

53 Mr. Hilliard asked the Minister for Finance the reason for the 71 per cent increase under Vote 2, subhead D, in the Estimates for Public Services 1993.

This subhead was increased to allow for the equipping and for the running costs of a Committee Room in connection with the televising of Oireachtas Committees.

Question:

54 Mr. Hilliard asked the Minister for Finance if he will make a statement on the 74 per cent increase in the 1993 Estimates for Public Services under Vote 1, subhead A2.

The main component of this subhead (about 95 per cent.) is the provision for State Visits and other official visits abroad by the President. The purpose of these visits is to promote relations with other states, to raise Ireland's profile internationally and to encourage foreign investment, trade, tourism and other economic and cultural links.

The number of such visits varies from year to year and some arise at relatively short notice. The provision of £106,000 in the subhead for this year is primarily intended to cover the estimated cost of such visits abroad which are thought likely to occur in 1993.

Question:

55 Mr. Hilliard asked the Minister for Finance the reason for the 318 per cent increase in expenditure under Vote 5, subhead A6, in the Estimates for Public Services 1993.

The increase arises from the cost of the decentralisation of the Central Statistics Office to Cork.
