Vol. 427 No. 2

Written Answers. - Transfer of Gardaí to EOLAS.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

84 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice when members of the Garda at present discharging the weights and measures inspection and enforcement function will be offered the opportunity of transferring to EOLAS.

The issue of the transfer of the weights and measures responsibility from the Garda authorities to a new legal Metrology Service under the auspices of EOLAS is currently the subject of negotiation between officials of my Department, the Department of Enterprise and Employment and the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors, which represents the Garda Weights and Measures Inspectorate. As the matter has yet to be resolved, a date has not been agreed for the transfer in question.

It is hoped that suitable terms and conditions will be agreed which will encourage Garda Weights and Measures Inspectors to opt to transfer to the new service. Those members who wish to remain in the Garda Síochána on other duties would of course be facilitated.
