86 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Justice the number of prisoners who were granted temporary release over the recent Christmas/New Year period; and if, without identifying the prisoners concerned, she will list for each case the offence for which the prisoner had been convicted; the total length of sentence being served and the length of sentence remaining.
There were 343 prisoners granted temporary release over the Christmas-New Year period.

87 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Justice the reason a prisoner (details supplied), who was due to be released within three weeks was refused temporary release during the recent Christmas/New Year holiday.
The person referred to in the Deputy's question was convicted of indecent assault and sentenced to 20 months' imprisonment. His release date with remission was 16 January 1993.
It is not the practice to comment on decisions in individual cases and I do not propose to do so in this instance. I should say, however, that when deciding on applications for temporary release regard is had to many factors including the nature of the offence, length of sentence served, behaviour while in custody and the possible risk which a release may pose to the community.
