Vol. 428 No. 6

Written Answers. - Credit Control Bill.

Bernard Allen

Question:

38 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment when a new credit control Bill will be introduced.

I assume that the Bill to which the Deputy refers is the Consumer Credit Bill, 1993. The Attorney General is at present preparing this Bill to give effect to EC Council Directive 87/102/EEC as amended by Directive 90/88/EEC on Consumer Credit. It forms part of the commitment in the Programme for a Partnership Government to strengthen consumers' rights.

The Bill will provide for effective and wide-ranging controls on most forms of credit including moneylending.

I would refer the Deputy to replies to Question No. 196 of 10 February 1993 and Question No. 6 of 18 February 1993 relating to this issue.
