Vol. 429 No. 1

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants Scheme.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

111 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the anomaly in the higher education grants scheme as it applies to mature students whereby a mature student who is living away from home in the town or city of the college in which he/she wishes to study is paid the adjacent grant even though his/her living circumstances are the same as a student from outside the area who will benefit from a non-adjacent grant; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Higher Education Grants are paid at adjacent (lower) or non-adjacent (higher) rates by reference to the location of the grant-holders permanent residence and of the institution concerned.

I have not seen any evidence to show that the terms of the Higher Education Grants Scheme relating to mature students are, in fact, anomalous in this regard.

However, if the Deputy wishes to bring particular cases and circumstances to my attention I will be happy to have them investigated.
