Vol. 429 No. 1

Written Answers. - Transport Proposals.

Peadar Clohessy

Question:

19 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for the Environment the plans, if any, he has to ensure integration of environmental considerations into proposals for transport under the Cohesion Fund; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The overall policy approach to road investment, whether assisted by the Cohesion Fund or not, is based on the concept of sustainable mobility. This recognises the importance of improving the road network to help promote economic development and assist the economy to derive full benefit from the Single Market, while also ensuring that this work is undertaken in such a way as to prevent, reduce or offset any significant adverse effects on the environment. The evaluation of all significant road projects, including those submitted for Cohesion Fund assistance, includes either a review of any likely significant environmental effects or a full environmental impact assessment, whichever is appropriate.
