Vol. 429 No. 5

Ceisteanna-Questions. Oral Answers. - An Bord Tráchtála.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

4 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade if it has been decided to disband An Bord Tráchtála and include its functions in a new body Forbairt; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

No such decision has been taken by the Government.

Is the Minister concerned that An Bord Tráchtála may be broken up as part of a Government reorganisation of agencies? Is he concerned that export firms who want to deal with a focused, flexible and accessible trade and marketing board rather than a monolithic super-agency would be unhappy about this move? Would such a move ruin the focus on sales of Irish products generated in the marketplace by An Bord Tráchtála?

The implementation of the Culliton report has been examined by a Cabinet sub-committee, and I am sure that the Deputy has read about that in the past few weeks. The recommendations of the Cabinet sub-committee must be considered by the Government following which, the matters to which the Deputy referred will be explained.
