Vol. 429 No. 5

Written Answers. - Legal Mininum Age for Marriage.

Ivor Callely

Question:

51 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform the proposals, if any, he has to raise the legal age for marriage; if he has received submissions in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

In the Programme for a Partnership Government there is a commitment to increase the legal minimum age for marriage to 18 years. Proposals to give effect to this will be introduced in the normal way and in the context of the Government's overall legislative programme for family law reform. While no formal submissions have been received on the matter to date the report of the Second Commission on the Status of Women, which was recently submitted to Government, recommends that the minimum age for marriage be increased to 18 years.
