Written Answers. - VAT and Excise Duties.

Peter Barry

Question:

262 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications what is the element of petroleum, diesel and heating oil domestic prices that goes in VAT and excise duty; the margins that are available for producers, wholesalers and retailers; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Minister for Finance, who has responsibility for VAT and excise, has informed me that the rates of VAT and excise duty on domestic oil prices are as follows:

VAT

Excise Deputy

per hectolitre

per gallon

Petrol (leaded)

21%

£28.70

£1.305

Petrol (unleaded)

21%

£26.14

£1.188

Autodiesel

21%

£22.31

£1.014

Gasoil (heating oil)

12.5%

£3.73

£0.170

Since the 1991 Competition Act came into force, margins have been determined by those engaged in the industry without the intervention of other statutory controls.
