Vol. 429 No. 8

Written Answers. - Carravaggio Painting.

Máirín Quill

Question:

15 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht if the recently discovered Carravaggio painting is now in public ownership; if not, the terms under which it is held by the National Gallery; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The painting "The Taking of Christ", believed to be a famous lost work by the Italian artist Carravaggio, was given to the National Gallery of Ireland by the Jesuit Community in Ireland on unconditional and indefinite loan, where it will be available on public display from October next when restoration and technical analysis has been completed.

I would like to take this opportunity to place on record my grateful thanks and the thanks of the Irish people for the great generosity and patriotism shown by the Jesuit Community in Ireland in giving this painting to the National Gallery of Ireland.
