Vol. 429 No. 8

Written Answers. - Levy on Motor Fuels.

John Bruton

Question:

48 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the approximate additional tax per litre that would have to be levied on petrol sold in Ireland to fund the Government's proposed system of replacing insurance premia for third party liability by a levy on motor fuels.

I outlined the position regarding the study on the feasibility of replacing the current system of insurance premiums by means of a levy on motor fuels in an answer given to a question on 31 March 1993 (Official Report — Volume 428 No. 6 — columns 1512-1513). It would be part of such a study to estimate the additional tax implications.
