Vol. 429 No. 8

Written Answers. - Reduction in Grant Allocation for Roads.

John Bruton

Question:

51 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment the reason he reduced the discretionary grant allocation for regional and county roads to Meath County Council from £2,539,000 in 1992 to £2,415,000 in 1993.

The provision in my Department's Vote in respect of grants for regional and country roads in 1993 is £4 million less than the 1992 provision. This is reflected in the discretionary grants allocated to Meath and other county councils. The reduction in the overall grants provision was determined having regard to the continuing need for tight controls on public expenditure while simultaneously making available sufficient funds to attract the maximum possible support from EC Structural and Cohesion Funds for road improvement purposes.

During the four years 1989-1992, discretionary grants totalling some £250 million were provided to county councils to supplement expenditure from their own resources on regional and country roads. The provision for 1993 represents a substantial level of support and is the maximum possible in the light of current economic circumstances and the funding requirements of national roads.
