Vol. 430 No. 3

Written Answers. - Funding for Dublin School.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

139 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education if she will assist a school (details supplied) in Dublin 6, which has built a sports hall but cannot complete it being £90,000 short of the necessary funding to do so, since the school does not have showers or adequate changing rooms and is a girls school; and if, in view of the Government's commitment to equality, she will give this school the necessary assistance.

Due to the demands on the capital resources available, priority has been given for some time to the provision of essential teaching spaces. As a result it is not possible in present circumstances to grant aid provision of physical education facilities at existing schools without such facilities.

Provision of PE facilities in such schools will resume as soon as pressure on available resources for classroom accommodation has eased.
