Vol. 430 No. 3

Written Answers. - Appointment of Teachers.

Robert Molloy

Question:

166 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Education if she will approve the application for the appointment of an additional teacher at Scoil Mhuire, Tuairín, Béal an Daingin, Connemara, County Galway before the school year commencing September 1993; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The authorised staffing for a national school is determined by the number of pupils enrolled in the school on the 30 September of the previous year.

The enrolment in Tuairin on 30 September 1992 was 58 which warrants a staff of principal and one assistant for the 1993-94 school year. The second assistant at present serving in the school was due to be placed on the redeployment panel. This teacher has however, requested permission to defer her panel rights due to maternity. Her request has been granted and she will not be placed on the panel until April 1994.

Question:

167 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Education if she has received a request from An Bord Bainistíochta Scoile, Cill Chiaráin, Connemara, Contae na Gaillimhe regarding application for the appointment of a third teacher for this school at the commencement of the next school year, September 1993; if so, if she will accede to this request; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I assume that the school referred to by the Deputy is Ardmore national school, Cill Chiaran, Connemara, County Galway. The board of management of this school have been informed that they can appoint a third teacher to the school from 1 September 1993.

Máirín Quill

Question:

168 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Education the number of permanent whole-time teaching posts warranted by the pupil enrolment and sought by boards of management of community and comprehensive schools which were unfilled on a permanent whole-time basis in the school year 1992-93 because of her Department's refusal to fill posts on a permanent whole-time basis.

The number of full-time posts warranted by the enrolment in community-comprehensive schools for 1992-93 is 2,546. Boards of management sought sanction for 124 permanent whole-time appointments for the 1992-93 school year. Sanction was given for 86.

The position for 1993-94 is being considered at present.
