Vol. 430 No. 3

Written Answers. - Teachers' Salaries.

Máirín Quill

Question:

169 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Education the number of teachers in voluntary secondary, community and comprehensive schools, community colleges and vocational schools who are not in receipt of a degree allowance in their salary; and the number of teachers who were in service as teachers prior to the introduction of the common basic salary scale for teachers.

There are at present 918 teachers in secondary, community and comprehensive schools who are in receipt of incremental salary who are not in receipt of a degree allowance.

There were 5,899 permanent whole-time teachers employed in post-primary schools in 1967, the year before the common basic scale was introduced.

The information in relation to vocational teachers, who are employed and paid by the vocational educational committees, is not readily available.

Question:

170 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Education if she will give details of new appointments to ex-quota remedial posts in voluntary secondary, community and comprehensive schools, community colleges and vocational schools in the years 1990-91, 1991-92, 1992-93 and of the new appointments of ex-quota remedial teachers she proposes to make in the school year 1993-94 in voluntary secondary, community and comprehensive schools, community colleges and vocational schools.

There are 252 remedial posts and 25 remedial-guidance posts allocated to post-primary schools on an ex-quota basis at present.

My Department did not sanction any new ex-quota remedial posts in the years in question. I am not in a position to say whether new appointments were made to existing posts in that period.

There is no provision for allocating additional ex-quota remedial posts for the 1993-94 school year. The Deputy is aware that many new posts have been created in the post-primary sector as a result of the implementation of the provision of the Programme for Economic and Social Progress and it is open to the authorities of the schools concerned to appoint remedial teachers within quota if they so wish.
