Question:

44 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the importance of sport in the character development of children, as a national sport and the high cost of hurleys, she will make a grant available to schools and hurling clubs to offset the VAT element.

No provision has been made in 1993 for the payment of such a grant. In the years 1988 to 1991 grants totalling £350,000 were paid to Cumann Luthchleas Gael in respect of a scheme to subsidise the cost of hurleys and helmets for young players.
