Vol. 430 No. 3

Written Answers. - Policy on Sexual Harassment.

John Bruton

Question:

84 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education the action, if any, she proposes to take on the recommendation of the Second Commission on the Status of Women that all third level colleges should be required to develop and implement equal opportunities policies and action programmes and a policy on sexual harassment for students and employees.

Since the publication of the report of the Second Commission on the Status of Women my Department has confirmed that all the universities and third-level colleges have policies and are implementing programmes in the area of equal opportunity that are consistent with the recommendations of the Commission.

All the institutions have developed or are in the process of developing policies on sexual harassment. Many have produced and issued relevant documentation for both staff and students.

The recent Regional Technical Colleges Act and the Dublin Institute of Technology Act, which came into effect on 1 January 1993 and gave corporate status to these institutions, specifically require these institutions to have regard to the attainment of gender equity and equality of opportunity in education.
