Vol. 430 No. 3

Written Answers. - Cork Urban Renewal.

Bernard Allen

Question:

103 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Finance if he will give the Shandon and surrounding area in Cork city a status similar to that of the Temple Bar area of Dublin.

In 1991, Temple Bar was selected as a flagship project to mark Dublin's year as European City of Culture. The special incentives available in Temple Bar were given on a once off basis to foster the renewal of what is recognised as a unique and historic and cultural area. There is no question of extending these incentives to other areas of the country.

It should be noted that 126 acres of land in Cork are already designated for urban renewal. Part of Shandon Street and Pope's Quay are included in the designated area and are eligible for the full range of urban renewal incentives available in the designated areas in general.
