Vol. 430 No. 8

Written Answers. - International Convention on Climate Change.

John Bruton

Question:

180 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment the action he has taken to secure the ratification by Ireland of the International Conventions on Climate Change which he signed on behalf of the country in Rio de Janeiro; when he expects this convention to come into effect here in full; and whether legislation will be required for the purpose.

I am pursuing the necessary arrangements to enable Ireland to ratify this Convention, alongside our EC partners before the end of this year. Present indications are that the Convention will come into effect in 1994. I do not anticipate that legislation will be required to support ratification of the Convention.
