Vol. 430 No. 8

Written Answers. - Ballyjamesduff (Cavan) Co-Op Mart.

Andrew Boylan

Question:

198 Mr. Boylan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the reason for the refusal to sanction Ballyjamesduff Co-op Mart as a designated body for the inspection of heifers for sale to Northern Ireland; if his attention has been drawn to the high volume of sales in this mart and the great inconvenience caused to farmers and buyers; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The inspection of cattle destined for export to Northern Ireland commenced in January of this year. A number of assembly centres have been approved at which this inspection service is provided. For the convenience of exporters at least one centre has been approved in each county and the arrangements are working satisfactorily.

The Government has approved the allocation of additional staff to my Department for the purpose of carrying out new tasks including the inspection service referred to above. Following recruitment it will be possible to extend the list of assembly centres and Ballyjamesduff Co-op Mart's application will then be examined.
