Vol. 430 No. 8

Written Answers. - Beef Tribunal.

Ivor Callely

Question:

202 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the way in which payment is made to barristers and other legal representatives at the Beef Tribunal; the total moneys paid to-date; to whom payments are made; if payments are made in advance; and the certification process that is adopted.

All legal fees are paid on presentation of claims which have been certified by the Chairman of the tribunal in respect of Counsel for the Tribunal and by the Attorney General's Office in respect of Counsel for State. The daily rates are fixed by the Office of the Attorney General.

To date the total legal fees paid are £3.7 million as follows: Counsel for State, £1.9 million; Counsel for Tribunal, £1.8 million.

No advance payments are made.
