Vol. 430 No. 8

Written Answers. - Drugs Refund Scheme.

Michael Creed

Question:

228 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Health if he will instruct the health boards to refund the public under the drugs refund scheme for the purchase of nebulisers as these are very expensive.

The drugs refund scheme provides for a refund of expenditure on prescribed medicines and appliances above £90 in a calendar quarter, which are purchased for use within this period. As nebulisers do not fall within the provisions of the drugs refund scheme they are not reckonable for reimbursement under this scheme.

Health boards may offer assistance towards the cost of nebulisers, where in the opinion of the chief executive officer a person is unable to acquire one without undue financial hardship. Health boards consider each application individually, according to its merits.
