Vol. 430 No. 8

Written Answers. - Retail Business Regulation.

Jim Higgins

Question:

46 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment his views on whether there is an over-regulation of Irish retail business; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As the Deputy will be aware, I recently announced the establishment of a working group under my chairmanship for the development of a charter for small business. This initiative has been taken in the context of the Government's commitment to the promotion of enterprise in this country. One subject of his initiative will be to simplify the bureaucratic and regulatory requirements of small businesses.

I would expect that the working group's findings in this regard will be of considerable benefit to the development of all small businesses, including those in the retail sector. In this regard, if there are any particular issues of conern to the Deputy, I would invite him to bring them to the attention of my Department.
