Vol. 430 No. 8

Written Answers. - Mid-West Job Creation Targets.

Peadar Clohessy

Question:

57 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment if the job creation targets for the mid-west region, for which SFADCo had responsibility, were met; and if they were in line with the national average.

I am assuming that the Deputy is referring to the job creation targets under the Programme for Economic and Social Progress. Under this programme a target has been set to create 20,000 gross jobs on average each year in the manufacturing and international services sectors for the years up to and including 1993.

These targets are set on a national basis and their implementation at a regional level is essentially a matter for the relevant industrial development agencies i.e. the IDA, Shannon Development and Udarás na Gaeltachta.

In so far as Shannon Development is concerned, their end of year statement last year indicated that their gross job creation target for 1992, 1,200 had been exceeded and that job gains of 1,697 were recorded during the year.
This compares with a total of 12,056 first-time jobs across IDA supported industry, in 1992.
