Vol. 431 No. 4

Written Answers. - Trade with the USA.

Donal Carey

Question:

33 Mr. Carey asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the measures, if any, which his Department and An Bord Tráchtála intend to put in place to increase our export trade to the USA; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Out total exports to the US in 1992 came to over £1.367 billion, an increase of over £58.4 million or 4 per cent over 1991. This continued steady growth was achieved despite slow demand in the US economy during 1992. The signs of sustained economic recovery in the US so far this year are encouraging and, if it continues, our exporters will be well placed to achieve an even better performance in 1993.

An Bord Tráchtála plans for 1993-94 aim to expand Ireland's indigenous presence in North America. This will be achieved through sourcing and promotion programmes and through a rapid expansion of the board's geographical coverage of the market. A 15 per cent growth in indigenous exports to £560 million is targeted, incorporating an 11 per cent increase in the exports of indigenous industrial products such as engineering, electronics, telecommunications, print and software, bringing this sector to over £250 million. The 1993-94 programme includes presentations to major purchasers, buyer visits to Ireland, trade fair promotions and specialist missions.

The US market is of vital importance for many small exporters of consumer products. Over 300 US buyers visited "Showcase Dublin" in January 1993, which led to significant orders for many smaller craft companies. In June I will be launching a major trade promotion in Chicago, featuring the products of 120 exporters, including 30 from Northern Ireland. Food and drink exporters will continue to be supported through trade promotions and specialist events.

An Bord Tráchtála operations in the United States are directed from its New York office. Programmes are implemented through a network of trade consultants covering Atlanta, Boston, San Francisco, Chicago and Texas.
