Vol. 431 No. 5

Written Answers. - Toxic Waste Effects.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

19 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if the Radiological Protection Agency is evaluating the effects of toxic waste in landfill sites; if this information, or other information related thereto, is available or will be available; the action, if any, he intends to take; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The evaluation of the effects of toxic wastes in landfill sites is not a function of the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland and no such work has been undertaken by the Institute.

While the subject of the Deputy's question relates to day to day administration of the Institute, I understand that the Institute does however, undertake radiological surveys as part of its function to provide advice on radiation protection matters. What the Deputy may have in mind is a radiological survey of a site in Co. Kildare which was undertaken recently by the Institute for another party.

Nothing unusual was detected at the site as a result of the radiological survey and no action is called for.
