Vol. 431 No. 5

Written Answers. - Radioactivity at Gas Interconnector Site.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

22 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if his attention has been drawn to the erection of signs with trefoil symbols indicating radioactivity at the site of the gas interconnector in Loughshinny, County Dublin; if he will give details of all radioactive substances which have been used during the relevant work at Loughshinny; and the purpose for which they have been used.

Bord Gais Éireann advises that the standards for gas transmission lines require that all construction welds be inspected by X-Ray. Approved equipment for this purpose was in use by BGE at Loughshinny during welding operations on the interconnector pipeline. The process employs small amounts of radio active material and, although the area requiring protection is very small, the trefoil symbol is being displayed in accordance with relevant standards and good practice during such operations.
