Vol. 431 No. 5

Written Answers. - Public Buildings and Monuments Access.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

35 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Finance the legislation that is in place regarding access to public buildings and monuments for the disabled; and if it is intended to introduce further legislation in the future.

Apart from access by the disabled to all new public buildings which is covered by the new Building Regulations introduced in 1992 by the Minister for the Environment I am not aware of legislation regarding access to public buildings and monuments.

The Commissioners of Public Works are of course required to give reasonable access to the public at State-owned national monuments. Legislative action generally would be a matter for the Minister for the Environment and Minister for Equality and Law Reform.
