Vol. 431 No. 5

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grant.

Jim Higgins

Question:

83 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Education if a student (details supplied) in Dublin 9 who is doing a three year BTech. National Diploma in Agriculture in Northern Ireland, a course which is not available in the Republic of Ireland, should be entitled to receive grant assistance from the grant-awarding authorities in this country.

I understand that the person in question was refused a higher education grant by Dublin Corporation, the body statutorily entrusted with the administration of that scheme in this case on the basis that he did not satisfy the academic attainments requirements under the scheme and the course in question was not an approved course under the scheme.

My Department has received an application from the institution involved to have its courses approved for third level student grants. This application is currently being assessed by my Department and I will keep the Deputy informed of developments.
