Vol. 431 No. 5

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants Scheme.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

86 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education the reason a full non-adjacent higher education grant has not been awarded to a person (details supplied) in County Kildare; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I understand from Kildare County Council, which is the body statutorily entrusted with the administration of the higher education grants scheme in this case that on the basis of the family reckonable income and the scheme regulations governing the payment of maintenance grants at the "adjacent" rate the person in question was awarded a Full Fees and Part Maintenance (Adjacent Rate) Grant in accordance with the terms of the 1992 scheme.

I would refer the Deputy to the council for any further information he may require.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

87 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education if higher education grants are payable by local authorities only on foot of progress reports from the students' college; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Under the terms of the higher education grants scheme student grants are renewable annually subject, inter alia, to satisfactory attainment and conduct. In that connection, I understand that the local authorities who are statutorily entrusted with the administration of the scheme, obtain reports on grantholders from the relevant colleges.
