Vol. 431 No. 6

Written Answers. - Departmental Staff Statistics.

Robert Molloy

Question:

33 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform the number of staff by grade in his Department; the area of the public service to which they were attached prior to the establishment of his Department; the way in which his Departmental staff are assigned between the different areas of responsibility; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The following is the number of staff by grade in my Department:

Grade

No.

Secretary

1

Assistant Secretary

2

Principal

4

Legal Adviser

1

Assistant Principal

10

Information Officer

1

High Executive Officer

6

Executive Officer

8

Clerical Officer

5

Clerical Assistant

2

Clerical Assistant (Typist)

9

Services Officer

1

Total

50

Prior to the establishment of my Department they were attached to the Department of Enterprise and Employment (32), Justice (10) and the remainder to the Departments of the Taoiseach, Finance, and Tourism, Transport and Communications.
Twenty-two officers are engaged in equality, equal status and general administration duties; 12 are engaged on law reform work; and the remaining 16 are in the Minister's and secretary's offices.
My initial assessment is that the staff situation in the Department is rather tight. I am currently in the process of exploring ways and means whereby the pace at which the Government's legislative programme, in so far as it relates to my area of responsibility, can be expedited.
