Vol. 432 No. 4

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Pension Increases.

Seán Barrett

Question:

18 Mr. Barrett asked the Minister for Social Welfare the dates on which the increases in social welfare pensions were paid during the last ten years.

In 1983 the increase in the rate of retirement pension was implemented on Thursday, 30 June and the increase in the rates of old age contributory and non-contributory pensions was implemented on Friday, 1 July. From 1984 to 1987 inclusive the date of the increases was also on a Thursday and Friday, a week later in each successive year. Since 1988 the increases in rates of social welfare pensions have been implemented on the last Thursday and Friday of July in each year. The exact dates are in a tabular statement which I will make available to the Deputy.

The current rate for old age contributory and retirement pensions is £66.60 and the rate for old age non-contributory pension is £57.20. These rates will be increased by 3.5 per cent to £68.90 and £59.20 respectively, again from the last Thursday and Friday in July this year.
