Vol. 432 No. 6

Written Answers. - Broad Leaf Tree Planting.

John Bruton

Question:

143 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the additional measures, if any, he proposes to take to promote further increases in the planting of broad-leaf trees as suggested in his reply to Parliamentary Question No. 26 of 25 May 1993.

In order to achieve a higher rate of broadleaved planting I propose to do the following; first, review the current target of 10 per cent broadleaves for national planting, with a view to increasing it; monitor the set broadleaved target closely to see what is achieved; examine the current level of broadleaved grant rates under EC Regulation 2080/92 which covers the forestry accompanying measures to the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy; and encourage diversification of species through the advisory-inspection process and through publicity.
