Vol. 432 No. 6

Written Answers. - Sellafield Accident.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

176 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if he has written to his British counterpart to express concern at the accident which occurred on 19 April 1993 in the liquid vitrification plant at Sella-field about which no details were released until late May, during which a worker was left unaccompanied while his colleagues were evacuated after a radiation leak within the plant.

The incident the Deputy refers to occurred on 19 April at a vitrification plant cell at Sellafield and was not formally reportable to the UK Department of the Environment and, in fact, was not reported. However, I have sought details and have been informed that no one received any abnormal does of radiation and there were no consequences for the workforce, the public or the environment.

I have not written to my British counterpart about this particular incident as I have no responsibility for workers within the plant and there were no consequences for the Irish public or the environment.
