Vol. 432 No. 6

Written Answers. - UK Pressurised Water Reactor.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

177 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if the Irish Government will be opposing plans by British Nuclear Fuels Plc. to build a pressurised water reactor (PWR) at the Chapelcross nuclear energy plant in south Solway, United Kingdom.

I understand that BNFL have no plans to construct a pressurised water reactor at Chapelcross. The company is however conducting a feasibility study of a plant on this site. At present the UK Government has imposed a moratorium on the construction of any new nuclear plants pending the completion of a review of nuclear power policy in 1994.
