Vol. 432 No. 6

Written Answers. - Disabled Persons' Entitlements.

Richard Bruton

Question:

184 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Health if he will consider changes to deal with he injustice highlighted on page 49 of the recent report of the Ombudsman relating to entitlements of persons with a disability who are in residential care.

There is an informal scheme of payments to people with disabilities who are in residential accommodation and who have no other source of income. Under this scheme health boards may pay a nominal sum per week to such people to cover the cost of basic necessities such as news-papers, toiletries, sweets, etc. I have asked my Department to examine the feasibility of placing this scheme on a more formal basis.
