Vol. 432 No. 6

Written Answers. - Places in Third Level Education.

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

206 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Education the number of places which will be available to third level students this year; and the proportion of the 1993 school-leaving cohort, who wish to study at third level, who will actually find places in our colleges.

As the Deputy will be aware there have been very significant increases in the number of third level places available in recent years. Last year almost 80 per cent of eligible applicants for places received place offers and 55 per cent accepted.

In advance of final decisions by the institutions on the exact numbers of places available in various faculties and the determination of the number of eligible applicants for places it is not possible to give a precise answer as to the 1993 position. However I will be monitoring the situation closely to ensure that progress in improving access to third level is maintained.
