Vol. 432 No. 6

Written Answers. - Apprenticeship System.

Paul McGrath

Question:

52 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the system of access to training which is envisaged for the proposed new designated skills; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I take it the Deputy's question relates to training for apprentices under the new apprenticeship system.

The new system is being developed by FÁS with the advice of the National Apprenticeship Advisory Committee which is representative of employer and trade union bodies, the Department of Education and FÁS.

The future applicants for apprenticeship must be at least 16 years of age and have at least five grade Ds in the Junior Certificate examinations.

Under the new system recruitment of apprentices will be the responsibility of employers. This is essential because on the job training is an integral part of the system.
However, FÁS is examining how people disadvantaged in the labour market such as women and the disabled can be assisted in obtaining an equitable share of apprenticeships.
It is also intended to extent apprenticeship to additional occupations and FÁS is considering this matter at present.
