Vol. 432 No. 7

Written Answers. - Heart Bypass Operations.

Ivor Callely

Question:

115 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health the average waiting period for a heart bypass operation; the hospitals where such operations are carried out; the average cost of the operation in each hospital; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The admission of a patient to hospital for cardiac surgery is a clinical decision taken by the consultant concerned and is solely based on the patient's condition and not on length of time on the waiting list.

Heart surgery for public patients is performed in three locations — the National Cardiac Unit, Mater Misericordiae Hospital, Dublin, Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin and Cork Regional Hospital.
Calculation of costs is influenced by the complexity of the case (whether or not a catheter or a valve is required) and individual procedures are not costed on a routine basis. In general, however, most CABGs cost between £6,000 and £8,500.
