Vol. 432 No. 7

Written Answers. - Ring of Kerry Road.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Question:

38 Mrs. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for the Environment if it is proposed that EC structural funds will be made available for major improvements on the Ring of Kerry roads in view of their importance to national tourism.

No proposals for major improvement works on those sections of national secondary and regional roads which comprise the Ring of Kerry have been received in my Department. Road grants have, however, been provided in most years for strengthening works at various locations on the national secondary road sections of this route. A total of £2,439,000 was provided between 1989 and 1992 for such works and in 1993 a further £400,000 has been allocated.

Initial funding for all improvement projects on national roads is provided by Government road grants. EC assistance is remitted to the Exchequer in partial recoupment of these grants. Final decisions on the amount of EC assistance to be sought for improvement works on various categories of roads will be made by the Government in the context of the National Development Plan.

Improvements on the regional road sections of the Ring of Kerry route fall to be financed by Kerry County Council from their own resources supplemented by the annual discretionary grants provided by my Department. The 1993 discretionary grant allocation to the council is £2,305,000. If the council decide to carry out improvements on the road sections concerned from their discretionary grant, it would be open to them to nominate such works for co-financing from EC funds. Any EC funding provided as a result would, however, be remitted to the Exchequer in partial recoupment of the road grants.
